James 4:9-10
Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and [your] joy to
heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
John 16:20
Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice:
and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
Joshua 1:6-11
Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the
land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous,
that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee:
turn not from it [to] the right hand or [to] the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever
thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate
therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein:
for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not
I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for
the LORD thy God [is] with thee whithersoever thou goest. Then Joshua commanded the officers of
the people, saying, Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals;
for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the
LORD your God giveth you to possess it.
Psalms 42:5-6
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and [why] art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I
shall yet praise him [for] the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me:
therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill
Mizar.
Psalms 34:1-22
([A Psalm] of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he
departed.)
I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise [shall] continually [be] in my mouth. My soul
shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear [thereof], and be glad. O magnify the
LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and
delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces
were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard [him], and saved him out of all his
troubles. The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
O taste and see that the LORD [is] good: blessed [is] the man [that] trusteth in him. O fear the
LORD, ye his saints: for [there is] no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack,
and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good [thing]. Come, ye children,
hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man [is he that] desireth life,
[and] loveth [many] days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from
speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD
[are] upon the righteous, and his ears [are open] unto their cry. The face of the LORD [is]
against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. [The righteous]
cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD [is] nigh
unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many [are]
the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all
his bones: not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the
righteous shall be desolate. The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that
trust in him shall be desolate.
Psalms 91:1-16
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the
Almighty. I will say of the LORD, [He is] my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, [and] from the noisome pestilence.
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth
[shall be thy] shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; [nor]
for the arrow [that] flieth by day; [Nor] for the pestilence [that] walketh in darkness; [nor]
for the destruction [that] wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten
thousand at thy right hand; [but] it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou
behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the LORD, [which is] my refuge,
[even] the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague
come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy
ways. They shall bear thee up in [their] hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou
shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high,
because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I [will be] with
him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew
him my salvation.
Psalms 121:1-8
(A Song of degrees.)
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help [cometh] from the
LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee
will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD [is]
thy keeper: the LORD [is] thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day,
nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall in from this time
forth, and even for evermore.
